A local guide’s Scariness Factor ratings
Let’s start here:
Fear is subjective.
What gives one person goosebumps might not faze another. For some, a chilling story is enough. For others, it’s all about jump scares and heart-racing panic.
But, with broad strokes and from the perspective of someone who’s worked all these haunts, here’s my insider take on the Scariest Tours in New Orleans, rated on the Skull Scale:
💀 = not too scary | 💀💀💀💀💀 = pure terror

A 1 hour and 45-minute walking tour through the French Quarter. These are typically spooky, not terrifying. On my tour, the fear factor builds gradually. I’ve got a couple of tales that cause genuine gasps, but for most, it's eerie rather than nightmare-inducing.
Variables:
Your group really matters. A “here for it” group ups the energy; a bored or trolling one lowers it.
For max fear: book a private tour to control the vibe and avoid party crashers.
Average scariness:
💀💀💀 (3 out of 5 skulls)
“Entertaining, atmospheric, with a couple of spine-tinglers.”

These tours start in the French Quarter and head out to Mid-City, including a stop at Odd Fellows Rest, an above-ground secret society cemetery. Our company has exclusive access—and it’s worth the ticket alone.
We don’t encourage heavy drinking, which helps maintain both the dignity and the scariness of the experience.
Guides matter here too—I have two specific guides I’d recommend for a truly haunting experience.
When the group energy is right:
💀💀💀💀 (4 out of 5 skulls)
“Historic, eerie, and immersive—especially when the vibe is right.”

A seasonal haunted attraction (September–November) located in an actual former mortuary, now a full-blown horror maze with actors, special effects, and jump scares galore.
This is what people usually picture when they think “scary.” Some love it, some hate it—I’m firmly in the love it camp.
Only available during Halloween season.
💀💀💀💀💀 (5 out of 5 skulls)
“Adrenaline-pumping horror fun. Don’t bring a party pooper.”

I’ll be honest—these are usually not scary. In my experience, there's almost always someone who’s not into it and is actively trying to ruin it for others. The focus on drinking over storytelling tends to dull the spooky edge.
That’s why I only lead pub crawls for private parties these days.
💀💀 (2 out of 5 skulls)
“More party, less paranormal. Fun with the right group, but rarely scary.”

Yes—this is a thing! I (and others) offer private storytelling experiences at homes, rentals, or parties. I bring props, miniature haunted New Orleans houses, and tailored tales to you.
The intimacy and focus (plus the AC!) allow for a much creepier, immersive experience. And you don’t have to walk!
Again, if someone in your group is disruptive, it’ll break the spell—but with the right vibe? Chills.
💀💀💀💀 (4 out of 5 skulls)
“Chilling and cozy all at once. Great for parties or low-mobility guests.”
